BONIN SWEEPS THE WEEKEND

The last weekend of July was a profitable one for Jay Bonin. The veteran IM tied for first in both the Saturday G/60 and the Sunday Action tournaments at the Marshall Chess Club, taking home a total of $157.67 for his efforts.

On Saturday, Bonin and FM Ilye Figler took a short draw to tie for first with GM Michael Rohde, who won his last three games after starting with a bye. The Sunday G/30 was a very strong event, with 9 masters (five rated over 2200 and four other NMs) in the lists. GM Rohde made it to the first round this time, but was knocked off by Vladimir Polyakin in the first round and by Bonin in the third. Bonin was nicked for a draw by Kassa Korley at the start, but yielded only a draw to co-winner Yefim Treger in the fourth round and beat Sam Barsky at the end to seal the deal.

FM Figler had the misfortune to play his former student, newly minted FM Alec Getz in the last round on Sunday; they tied for third by drawing. Barsky's 3.5/5 was good for the Under 2200 prize, while visiting Marylander John Sprague was the only player under 2000 to make 3 points.

26 entered on Saturday, 18 on Sunday.

4-WAY TIE IN MARSHALL JULY OPEN

A child didn't lead them, but he certainly outearned them.

Young David Hua was the big money winner at the Marshall CC July Open, winning the $133 prize for best result by a player rated 1700-1999. He did better than the four players who tied for the top three prizes; those hapless souls only took home $122.75 each with their 3.5 scores.

The winners were veterans Ilye Figler, Yefim Treger, Yevgeni Margulis, and junior Kassa Korley. Newcomer Molson Hart scored 2.5, a half point worse than Hua, and made "only" $112 as best Under 1700.

Astonishingly, 49 entries played the weekend after the World Open. A similar event, but with guaranteed prizes, will be held the weekend of July 19-20.

Yudasin, Braylovskiy Take July St. John's Masters

This time, Greg Braylovskiy got it right. The young American Senior Master tied for first in his second attempt at the St. John's Masters, after losing to Jaan Ehlvest in the last round a year ago. This time, he won 3 games and made a short draw with Israeli GM Leonid Yudasin to earn a tie for the first and second prizes with the former Candidate and walk off with $275.

GM Zviad Izoria arrived too late for the first round, and made a quick draw with his friend GM Jaan Ehlvest in the second round. Izoria won his last two games to tie for third and top Under 2400 with Expert Gregory Kimmel. Kimmel knocked off Israeli master Dov Gorman in the last round to win $100.

Five players tied for Under 2300 honors and won $9 each, but among these Kassa Korley's result stands out. The junior talent faced the toughest field of anyone, one IM and 3 GM's, and still managed 50%! Korley beat Jay Bonin at the start, drew with Michael Rohde and Jaan Ehlvest, and lost only to Izoria in the third round. Rohde and Ehlvest also made 2 points each, the latter drawing all four of his games. Bonin was less fortunate, losing to Dan Lowinger in the second round and withdrawing. Lowinger joined FM Boris Privman, WIM Shernaz Kennedy, and Yevgeniy Margulis at the two point plateau to tie Korley for the Under 2300 prize.

None of Korley's upsets could quite match Margulis' conquest of Israeli IM Eli Vovsha in sheer numerical magnitude, so Margulis picked up an additional $45.

Twenty-two players and one filler competed. Thanks to Assistant TD Ed Frumkin for his usual fine support, and to MCC Vice President Thomas Malloy, pinch-hitting in the role of refreshment supervisor for Dr. Frank Brady. The next event in the series will take place on Tuesday, August 19, 2008.
