Treger and Frumkin Maintain FIDE Thursdays Lead

NMs Yefim Treger and Ed Frumkin drew their third-round game on April 17 to maintain joint possession of first place in the Marshall FIDE Thursdays tournament. Gerd Kathstede amd Sandra Oliver are tied for third, a half-point behind the leaders.

Berkun Wins Wednesday Under-2000

Boris Berkun won he Marshall Wednesday Night Under-2000 after drawing with second-place finisher Kenneth Collins in the final round on April 15th. Berkun scored 4.5 out of 5 to win $132.00. Kenneth Collins scored 4-1 to win sole second prize, worth $77.00. Third place was shared by Dennis Moore and Gabriel Rigono; each scored 3.5 points and collected $27.50. Top Under 1700 was James Black with 3 points, good for $66.00. There were 22 players in the event.

Barbosa Wins Sunday Game/30

IM Oliver Barbosa won the Sunday Game 30 Tournament played at the Club on April 12. Barbosa scored 5 points in 5 rounds, winning $65.00. Second and Third Place was shared by 4 players, who also split the Under 2200 Class Prize: NM Yefim Treger, NM James West, Lamel Mc Bryde, and Steadroy Lloyd, each scored 3 points and each won $25.00. The prize for best Under 2000 went to Michael Bodek, scoring 2.5 points and winning $30.00. (Rilwan Ameen, scored 3 points, but Mr. Ameen was a filler, and therefore ineligible for any prize money.)

Barbosa Wins Saturday Game/30

IM Oliver Barbosa won the Saturday Game 30 on April 11, scoring 4-0 to win $130.00. Aleksandr Ostrovskiy and Edward Kopiecki winished a half-point behind, winning $70.50, and fourth place went to Aaron Landesman with 3 ($54), and Eric Bobrow also scored 3 to win the $65 under-2000 prize.

Lux and Tamarkin Wiin NY Experts

Veteran NMs Joe Lux and Larry Tamarkin shared first place in the NY Experts on Tuesday April 7 with 3-1 scores, each winning $47.50. Third place was shared by Nick Panico and Nicholas Proudfoot, each scoring 2.5 points and winning $12.50. Best Under 1800 was won by Shahzad Hasan with 1.5 points, worth $30.00. There were ten players in all.

Bonin, Hoffman, and Berg Win April Open

IM Jay Bonin, FM Asa Hoffmann and NM George Berg shared first place in the Marshall Chess Club April Open on April 4-5. Each scored 3.5 in four rounds and won $123.33.

There was also a three way tie for the Under 2000 Class Prize between Marcus Fenner, Frank Paciulli and Jason Margiotta, each scoring 2.5 points, worth $33.33 apiece. The Under 1700 Class Prize was split 6 ways: Etan Lankri, Ken Cohen, Justin Cooper, Christopher Winterowd, Reva Shree Singh, and David Karp all scored 2 points to win $14.17 each.
