Treger Still Perfect in Thursday Members' Open

NM Yefim Treger is the only remaining perfect score sfter two rounds of the Marshall Thursday Night Members-Only Open. NM Brian Hulse, Andrew Hellenschmidt, WIM Dorothy Teasley, Marian Waxman, and Edward Scher are a half-point behind.

There's still time to enter--next round is on Thursday February 5 at 7 PM; register to play by 6:45.

Treger Still Perfect in Wednesday Under-2000

Anatoly Treger ran his score to 4-0 in the Marshall Wednesday Night Under-2000. He lads the field by a full point after a round where all the games were decisive.

Tied for second with 3-1 are Sabrij Mehmedovic, Linda Diaz, and Chris Maksymowicz. The final round will be next Wednesday, February 4, at 7 PM.

Colas, Vural, and Kunin Top Under-1800 Victory

Guy Colas, Corey Vural, and Abraham Kunin scored 3-1 to tie for first in the Marshall Chess Club Under-1800 Victory tournament on Tuesday January 27. Winning the 4-round Game/30 event was worth $32each. Guido Van Der Werve won the under-1400 prize ($24).

Rawlins and Schwartz Lead Monday Under-1600

After three rounds of the Marshall Monday Night Under-1600, Guy Rawlins and Tyler Schwartz remain atop the 24-player field with perfect scores. Edward Daley is also undefeated, a half-point behind the leaders.

Lenderman, Bonin, and Fleischman Win Marshall January Grand Prix

IM Alex Lenderman, IM Jay Bonin, and NM Eric Fleischman each scored 3 1/2 out of 4 to win the Marshall Chess Club January Grand Prix on January 24-25. The trio gained $141.67 each for the victory.

NM Yevgeni Margulis and Harry Wheeler split the under-2200 prize ($50 each) with 3 points, while Michael Kats also scored 3 and picked up the $100 under-2000 prize.

Leif Pressman directed the 37-player event.

Korley Takes Rapids

NM Kassa Korley won the Friday Night Rapids on January 23. Korley took down the a 6 player field with a score of 7.5/10 in a double-round-robin.

Lenderman Sweeps "Four Rated Games Tonight"

IM Alex Lenderman scored a perfect 4-0 to top the field by a full point in the Thursday January 22 edition of "Four Rated Games Tonight". IM Jay Bonin and NM Kassa Korley tied fore second with 3-1. Thursday-Night Members' Open Under Way

The Marshall Chess Club Thursday-Night Members' Open got underway on January 22 with 13 entries. One game will be played every Thursday through February 19th at 7 PM. There's still time to enter--members may register by 6:45 PM.

Treger Leads Wednesday Under-2000

Anatoly Treger improved his record to 3-0 to open up a full-point lead in the Marshall Wednesday Night Under-2000 on January 21. A cast of thousands is tied for second with 2-1. The next round will be Wednesday January 28 at 7 PM.

Rohde and lenderman Win St. John's Masters

The January St. John's Masters action event at the Marshall Chess Club on January 20 was won by GM Michael Rohde and IM ALex Lenderman. Each scored 3 1/2 out of four and won $250.

Threes everywhere: third place was a three-way tie between GM Leonid Yudasin, GM Giorgi Kacheishvili, and IM Eli Vovsha, whose 3 points won $33.33 each.

The Under-2400 prize of $60.00 went to NM Yaacov Norowitz with 2 1/2. Six players (that's twice three) tied for the Under-2300 prize ($5 each) with 2 points: NM Leif Pressman, Allen Weiss, Travis Patay, Raven Sturt, Ben Gershenov, and Michael Hehir. Ben Gershenov also won the $30 prize for biggest upset for his first-round win over FM Asa Hoffmann). The full results are available from the USCF website.

Twenty-one players competed under the direction of Andre Harding. Thanks to him as well as to our sponsor, St. John's University and Dr. Frank Brady, tournament organizer.

The next third-Tuesday-of-the-month--another three!--St. John's Masters Tournament is on February 17th at 7:00 pm. The tournament is open to players rated 2100 and above, as well as any player Under 2100 who scores at least 2½ points in one of a "4 Rated Games Tonight!" Thursday Night Action tournaments between January 22 and February 12.

Lenderman Wins Sunday Action

IM Alex Lenderman scored 4 1/2 out of five to win the Marshall Chess Club Sunday Game/30 on January 18. Lenderman gained $80 for the victory. NM Yevgeni Margulis and Raven Sturt tied for second with 4 points, worth $45 each. NM Lawrence Tamarkin took the Under-2200 prize ($33) with 3, and Frank Paciulli was top under-2000, also with 3 ($37).

Hoffman and Weiss Win Saturday Game/60

FM Asa Hoffman and Allen Weiss scored 3 1/2 out of four to win the Marshall Chess Club Saturday Game/60 on January 17. They picked up $83 each for the victory. NM Yevgeni Margulis finished third with 3 points, worth $44.

Gordon Yang scored 2 1/2 to win the Under-1700 prize of $52, while Darrian Robinson and Garth Palmer won the 1700-1999 prize, worth $26.50 apiece, with 2 points.

Matthew Fischler and Leif Pressman directed the 21-player field.

Lenderman, Figler, and Margulis Win "Four Rated Games"

IM Alex Lenderman, FM Ilye Figler, and NM Yevgeni Margulis tied for first in the January 15 edition of "Four Rated Games Tonight". The three scored 3 1/2 points each to finish a full point ahead of the 20-player field.

Hulse, Frumkin, Ray Win Thursday-Night Members'

NM Brian Hulse and NM Ed Frumkin drew their last-round games (against NM George Berg and Mark Gerstl), and were joined at the top of the Thursday Night crosstable by Sarathi Ray, who defeated Nelson Farber. All three scored 3 1/2 points out of five and won $50.

Gerstl and Jerry Monaco finished a half-point behind the leaders, winning $15 each.

The next Thursday Night Swiss will begin on January 22, and is open to all Marshall Chess Club members. Register by 6:45 PM to play one game a week at 7 PM through February 19.

Treger Leads Wednesday Under-2000

Anatoly Treger won his second-round game to take sole possession of first place in the Marshall Wednesday Night Under-2000. Six of the eight games played in the round were drawn.

Marshall Monday Under-1600 Continues

The second round of the Marshall Monday Night Under-1600 featured two upsets--Edward Daley and Tyler Schwartz defeated players rated 200 and 175 points higher on the wall chart, and join Guy Rawlins and Tyson Mao in the lead with 2-0.

The field is up to 22 players, and there's still time to get in on the action--register by 6:45 PM next Monday and you'll get to play one game per week through February 9.

Ashley, Bonin, and Figler Win "Four Rated Games"

GM Maurice Ashley , IM Jay Bonin, and FM Ilye Figler tied for first in the Thursday January 8 edition of the Chess Center of New York's "Four Rated Games Tonight". Each scored 3 1/2 points and won $63.

Michael Hehir was top player under 2200, and Bora Yagiz was top under 2000. Both had3 points and took home $53.

Lenderman Wins Sliding Scale Quad

IM Alex Lenderman scored 3-0 to win the Sunday night Sliding Scale Quad at the Marshall on January 11. Lenderman picked up $74 for the victory. The event was directed by Steve Immitt for the Chess Center of New York, and the crosstable awaits your perusal on the USCF website.

Pillai Wins Winder Under-1800

Kadhir Pillai went 4-0 to win the Chess Center of New York's "Winter Under-1800" at the Marshall on Sunday January 11. Pillai won $100 for topping the 21-player field.

Polly Wright finished second a half-point behind Pillai, winning $66. Jackson Hueckel and Aaron Ross tied for third with 3-1, winning $17 each. The under-1600 prize was split by Amir Moazami and Dario Bonilla with 2 1/2, good for $31 each. Michael Wu and Theodore Coyne split the Under-1400 prize ($28 each) with 2 points.

Five Tie in Winter G/45 Grand Prix

There was a five-way tie for first in the Winter Game/45 Grand Prix at the Marshall Chess Club on Saturday January 10. GM Alexander Shabalov, FM Asa Hoffmann, FM Erez Klein, WIM Iryna Zenyuk, and NM James West all scored 4-1 to win $91 each.

Hoffman knocked off Shabalov in the final round; Klein had previously lost to Shabalov, while Hoffman had lost to Aleksandr Ostrovskiy. Zenyuk and West went undefeated.

The Under-2200 prize was also a five-way tie, with Allen Weiss, Aleksandr Ostrovskiy, Christopher Wu, Jake Miller, and Joshua Colas all scoring 3-2 and winning $33.

Lenderman Wins Super-Rapids

IM Alex Lenderman won the Friday Night Super-Rapids on January 9, scoring 13-1 in an 8-player double round-robin.

Hulse and Frumkin Lead Thursday Night Members' Open

Having takes two weeks off for Yuletide feasting, the warriors of the Thursday Night Members' Open returned to battle on January 8.

NM Ed Frumkin defeated Ken Cohen to join NM Brian Hulse (who drew with Nelson Farber) in the lead with a score of 3-1. Farber, Mark Gerstl, and Sarathi Ray are tied for third place, a half-point behind the leaders, going into next Thursday's final round.

Wednesday Night Under-2000 Begins

The Marshall's first Wednesday Night Under-2000 Swiss of the New Year kicked off on January 7 with 17 players. Any player rated below 2000 or unrated can join the fun by registering before 6:45 PM next Wednesday. One round per week is played at 7 PM, at a time control of 30 moves in 90 minutes followed by one hour sudden death.

Margulis and Weiss Win NY Experts

NM Yevgeni Margulis and Allen Weiss tied for first in the January New York Experts with 3-1 scored. The victory earned them $28.50 each. Evan Rabin was third, a half-point behind the leaders, winning $15. Gerald Towns and Henry Mori split the Under-1800 prize ($9 each).

The next New York Experts is on Tuesday, February 3, and is open to all rated under 2200 or unrated. Register by 6:45 PM; four games at G/30 are played starting at 7 PM.

Monday Night Under-1600 Begins

The first Monday-Night Under-1600 Swiss of 2009 began on January 5 with a 20-player field. The first round featured two big upsets: Ean Fonseca (1248) beat 1565-rated Joseph Fortunato, and 1062-rated Gerrit Albertson overturned Danny Torres (1385).

"Happy New Year" For Kacheishvili

GM Giorgi Kacheishvili won the "Happy New Year" Open on January 3-4 at the Marshall Chess Club. Kacheishvili scored a perfect 4-0 and took home $313. GM Leonid Yudasin and NM Yevgeni Margulis were a half-point behind, and their shared second/third prize was worth $118 each. Darrian Robinson picked up the $78 Under-2200 prize with 3 points, beating NM James West and NM George Berg along the way.

In the Under-2000 section David Collins and Gerald Towns shred first prize ($118 each) with 3 1/2 points, a full point ahead of tyeh rest of the field.

William Graif, Yuta Kakutani, Justus Williams, Ethan Segall, Kadhir Pillai, and Tyson Mao split the Under-1800 prize ($13 each) with 2 1/2.

The Open section had thirty-one players and three replicants re-entries. The Under-2000 section had 22 players and one re-entrant. Steve Immitt directed for the Chess Center of New York, and the full crosstables for both sections is on the USCF website.

Rohde and Lee Prove Points

GM Michael Rohde and Brendan Lee each scored 3-0 to win the Saturday Night "Prove Your Point" on January 3. Each won $40 for the 3-point scores. NM Leif Pressman and Raven Sturt scored 2 points, worth $10 each.

Yudasin Wins "First 10 Grand Prix Points of 2009"

GM Leonid Yudasin won the first "Four Rated Games Tonight" tournament of 2009 on Junuary 1. Yudasin scored a perfect 4-0 to top the field of 31 and win $200.

A half-point behind were IM Alex Lenderman and NM Yaacov Norowitz, who won $78 each. Raven Sturt won the Under-2200 prize ($90) with 3 points and Joshua Colas picked up the $86 Under-2000 prize with 2 1/2.

Yudasin Wins Last Blunder Of 2008

On New Year's Eve, GM Leonid Yudasin won the Chess Center of New York's "Your Last Blunder of 2008" with a perect 4-0 score. Yudasin won $353; a half-point behind him were NM Adam Maltese and NM Vitaly Zaderman, who gained $185 each.

NM Leif Pressman, NM Yevgeni Margulis, and Raven Sturt shared the under-2200 prize ($43 each) with 3 points. Andrew Ryba and Aaron Landesman were the top players under 2000, scoring 2 1/2 points, worth $59; and Alexis Paredes, Kalyan Shatdarsanam, Yashsavi Sharad, and Carlos Ennis won the Under-1800 prize ($28 each) with 2 points.
