Rohde and lenderman Win St. John's Masters

The January St. John's Masters action event at the Marshall Chess Club on January 20 was won by GM Michael Rohde and IM ALex Lenderman. Each scored 3 1/2 out of four and won $250.

Threes everywhere: third place was a three-way tie between GM Leonid Yudasin, GM Giorgi Kacheishvili, and IM Eli Vovsha, whose 3 points won $33.33 each.

The Under-2400 prize of $60.00 went to NM Yaacov Norowitz with 2 1/2. Six players (that's twice three) tied for the Under-2300 prize ($5 each) with 2 points: NM Leif Pressman, Allen Weiss, Travis Patay, Raven Sturt, Ben Gershenov, and Michael Hehir. Ben Gershenov also won the $30 prize for biggest upset for his first-round win over FM Asa Hoffmann). The full results are available from the USCF website.

Twenty-one players competed under the direction of Andre Harding. Thanks to him as well as to our sponsor, St. John's University and Dr. Frank Brady, tournament organizer.

The next third-Tuesday-of-the-month--another three!--St. John's Masters Tournament is on February 17th at 7:00 pm. The tournament is open to players rated 2100 and above, as well as any player Under 2100 who scores at least 2½ points in one of a "4 Rated Games Tonight!" Thursday Night Action tournaments between January 22 and February 12.
