Cohen Wins Under-1400 Action

Veteran Marshallite Ken Cohen won the New York February Under 1400 Action on Sunday, February 22. Cohen scored 3 1/₂ out of 4 to take the $70 first prize.

Dominique Oden, John Adkin, and George Grimbilas tied for second with 3-1, winning $23 each. The full results are available from the USCF website.

Smart Wins Under-13 Open

Thirty-three players competed in two sections of the New York February
Under 13 Open on Sunday, February 22.

In the Open section, Harrison Smart took first place on tiebreaks over Gordon Yang; both scored 3 1/₂ out of 4. At 3-1, Zhengjia Jiang placed third on tiebreaks over Justus Williams. The 2 1/₂-point scorers were Anthony Cortese (fifth), Leo Crossman (sixth), and John Kern (seventh), while 2-point scorers Robert Frants, Arjun Garg, and Isaac Barayev rounded out the top ten. Intermediate School 54 was the top team (Harrison Smart and Robert Frants).

In the Under-1000 section, Christopher Mercado topped teh field with 4-0, followed by Atash Nassiri at 3 1/₂. Anthony Asseviro (third on tiebreaks) and Don-Jordan Laidlow (fourth) were the 3-1 scorers. Fifth place went to Praveen Balakrishnan with 2 1/₂. Alexander Wright, Daniel Furman, Roman Pinto, Liam Pharr, and Ethan Matt completed the top ten; PS 166 (Mercado/Nassiri/Pinto) was the top team.

Rohde and Bonin Win New York February Action Grand Prix

GM Michael Rohde and IM Jay Bonin shared first and second place in the New York February Action Grand Prix on Staurday February 21. Each scored 4.5 points out of 5 rounds and collected $250 for the victory.

Six players finished tied for Third with 4-1 scores: GM Sergey Kudrin, IM Alex Lenderman, FM Alec Getz, and FM Boris Privman each won $29, while Aaron Landesman and Kevin Rosenberg won $113 each for the Under-2200 and Under-2000 class prizes.

Zhe Quan Sweeps Rapids

FM Zhe Quan scored 10-0 to win the Friday Night Rapids over an 11-man field on February 20.

Stripunsky Wins "Four Rated Games Tonight"

GM Alexander Stripunsky won the February 19th edition of the Chess Center of New York's long-running "Four Rated Games Tonight" G/30 event. Stripunsky went 4-0 to pick up the first prize of $169.

IM Jay Bonin and NM Oscar Maldonado were a half-point behind, sharing $85 each for second and third prizes. Nitai Leve, Ben Gershenov, Scot Mc Elheny, Michael Layevskiy, and Kevin Rosenberg all scored 3-1 and shared the Under-2200 and Under-2000 money ($41 each).

Treger Sweeps Thursday Night Members' Open

NM Yefim Treger completed a 5-0 sweep of the Marshall Thrusday-Night Members' Open On Febrauary 19, winning the tournament by two full points ahead of NM Brian Hulse, Andrew Hellenschmidt, NM Ed Frumkin, Sarathi Ray, and Ed Scher, who tied for second with 3-2.

The next Thursday Night tournament begins on February 26, and will be a FIDE-rated swiss open to all players rated over 1600.

Lenderman and Bonin Win St. John's Masters

IM Alex Lenderman and IM Jay Bonin tied for first in the St. John's Masters G/30 on Tuesday February 17. They both scored 3.5-0.5 and split the first and second place prize money of $250 each. Bonin also collect the upset prize ($30) for his final-round upending of GM Giorgi Kacheishvili.

Third prize was split by GM Michael Rohde and NM Yaacov Norowitz, whose 3-1 scores earned $80 each. The under-2300 prize was shared by FM Asa Hoffmann, WIM Iryna Zenyuk, and FM Boris Privman, all with 2.5 ($10 each).

The next St. John's Masters is on the third Tuesday of the month of March: March 17th at 7:00 pm. The games from the top boards will again be shown live on ICC.

The tournament is open to all players rated 2100 and above. Players under 2100 can qualify to enter by scoring 2.5 or higher in one of the four "4 Rated Games Tonight!" Thursday Night Action tournaments held since the previous month's St. John's Masters.

The tournament is sponsored by St. John's University and organized by Dr. Frank Brady.

Monday Under-1600 Begins

The latest edition of the Marshall Monday Night Under-1600 started on February 16 with 18 players. There's plenty of room--register by 6:45 PM Monday to play one game a week at Game/90.

Pujol and Hoffman Win Sunday G/30

FM Carlos Pujol tied with FM Asa Hoffman in the Marshall Sunday Game/30 on February 15. The pair scored 4-1 and won $71.50 each for topping the 18-player field.

A half-point behind, NM Oliver Chernin, NM Yevgeni Margulis, and NM Gregory Nolan split third prize ($28.67 each). Gary Patella and Amir Moazami were the top players rated under 2000 with 3-2. They won $20.50 each.

Three Tie in Saturday Game/60

FM Asa Hoffman tied for first with Justin Karp and Serge Adelson in the Marshall's Satirday Game/60 on February 14th. The three scored 3.5 out of 4 each, edging out Jasmine Grant with 3-1. The complete crosstable is available from the USCF.

Three In Luck On Friday The Thirteenth

The Friday Night Super Rapids on February 13 was an 8-player double round event won by Evan Rabin, Asa Hoffmann, and Lorenzo Davis.

Lenderman Wins "Ten Grand Prix Points Tonight"

IM Alex Lenderman swept the February 12th edition of the Chess Center of New York's "Four Rated Games Tonight", defeating GMs Giorgi Kacheishvili and Maurice Ashley along the road to victory. A first prize of $200 awaited Lenderman at the end of that road.

FM Ilye Figler was a half-point behind Lenderman in sole second place, picking up $110. Kacheishvili and Maurice Ashley ended the night tied for third with 3-1 (worth $22 each), along with NM Yevgeni Margulis and Bora Yagiz, whose 3 points were worth $88 each for the under-2200 prize.

Treger Leads Thursday-Night Members' Open

NM Yefim Treger ran his score to 4-0 to lead the Marshall Thursday Night Members' Swiss by a full point going into the final round. Edward Scher is all alone in second with 3-1.

The Marshall Wednesday Night Under-2000 started off with a big field of 24 players on February 11. There were two upsets: Madeline Bender beat Aigboje Aregbeyen (a 338-point reversal), and 313-point underdog Howard Pinn defeated Chris Maksymowicz.

Bonin and Yagiz Slide To Victory

IM Jay Bonin and Bora Yagiz drew their third-round game and shared first place in the "Sliding Scale Quad" on Sunday night (February 8). That was good for $32 each. The crosstable can be found on the USCF website.

Swindell Wins NY Under 1800

Shawn Swindell scored a perfect 4-0 to win the New York Under 1800 event at the Marshall on Sunday February 8. The victory earned him $136. A half-point back, Jonathan and Miguel Garcia shared second and third prizes ($89 each).

Fourth place was a huge tie: Alan Zhang, Kyle Moon, James Black, Gordon Yang, and Rashawn Williams all scored 3 points and won $9. Tae Kim and Alexander Crump split the under-1400 prize ($39 each) with 2.5 points.

Three GMs Win Super Saturday

GM Giorgi Kacheishvili, GM Sergey Kudrin, and GM Michael Rohde all scored 4-1 the Super Saturday Deferred (I don't think I've heard of that opening) on February 7th. Each earned $138 for the win.

NM Raven Sturt, Allen Weiss, and Aaron Landesman scored 3 1/₂ to share the Under-2200 prize ($28 each). Kevin Rosenberg scored 3-2 to pick up the $67 Under-2000 prize, while an even score was enough for Alex Yung to outscore everyone else under 1800 and win $54.

Molner and Zhe Quan Win Rapids

The Friday night rapids on February 6 was a five-players double round-robin. FM Mackenzie Molner and FM Zhe Quan shared first and second place, scoring 7-1.

Hoffman and Margulis Win "Four Rated Games Tonight"

FM Asa Hoffman and NM Yevgeni Margulis each scored 3 1/₂ points to win the Chess Center of New York's "Four Rated Games Tonight" on Thursday February 5. The victory earned them $92 apiece.

NM Leif Pressman and NM Oliver Chernin tied for third with 3 points ($19 each), along with Ben Gershenov (who earned $70 in under-2200 money). Scot Mc Elheny and Gabor Schnitzler split the under-2000 prize ($32 each) with 2 1/₂.

Dennis Moore and Sabrij Mehmedovic tied for second and third places ($66 each), and Kenneth Collins, James Black, Tyson Mao, and Ken Cohen split the under-1700 prize ($16.50 each) with 21/₂ points.

Bonin and Hoffman Win JanuFeb Open

IM Jay Bonin and FM Asa Hoffman tied for first in the Marshall Chess Club JanuFeb Open on January 31-February 1. Each scored 3 1/₂ out of 4 and won $107.

Third place was held by NM Yefim Treger NM Boris Privman, and NM James West, all with 3 points (worth $18.67). Bora Yagiz, Christophe Sugino , and Sabrij Mehmedovic split the Under-2000 prize ($24.33 each) with 1 1/₂. Maximillia Sherer, Kadhir Pillai, and Reva Shree Singh were the top players rated under 1700 with 2 points, and won $20.67 each.

Zhe Quan Wins Rapids

The Friday Night Rapids on January 30 was won by FM Zhe Quan with a score of 9-1. NM Raven Sturt took 2nd with 7-3, and Bora Yagiz won the Under-2000 prize with 4-6.

Ashley Sweeps "Four Rated Games Tonight"

GM Maurice Ashley went 4-0 to win the Thursday January 29 edition of "Four Rated Games Tonight" by a full point over the 24-player field. I'd say GM Ashley is back in form now.

Second place was a 4-way tie between FM Asa Hoffman,, NM Yevgeni Margulis, NM Daniel Lowinger, and Raven Sturt, all with 3-1. The result appears to put Sturt over 2200 for the first time, earning him his National Master title. Congrats!

Treger Still Perfect in Thursday Members' Open

Rohde and lenderman Win St. John's Masters

The January St. John's Masters action event at the Marshall Chess Club on January 20 was won by GM Michael Rohde and IM ALex Lenderman. Each scored 3 1/₂ out of four and won $250.

Threes everywhere: third place was a three-way tie between GM Leonid Yudasin, GM Giorgi Kacheishvili, and IM Eli Vovsha, whose 3 points won $33.33 each.

The Under-2400 prize of $60.00 went to NM Yaacov Norowitz with 2 1/₂. Six players (that's twice three) tied for the Under-2300 prize ($5 each) with 2 points: NM Leif Pressman, Allen Weiss, Travis Patay, Raven Sturt, Ben Gershenov, and Michael Hehir. Twenty-one players competed under the direction of Andre Harding. Thanks to him as well as to our sponsor, St. John's University and Dr. Frank Brady, tournament organizer.

The next third-Tuesday-of-the-month--another three!--St. John's Masters Tournament is on February 17th at 7:00 pm. The tournament is open to players rated 2100 and above, as well as any player Under 2100 who scores at least 2½ points in one of a "4 Rated Games Tonight!" Thursday Night Action tournaments between January 22 and February 12.

Lenderman Wins Sunday Action

IM Alex Lenderman scored 4 1/₂ out of five to win the Marshall Chess Club Sunday Game/30 on January 18. Lenderman gained $80 for the victory. NM Yevgeni Margulis and Raven Sturt tied for second with 4 points, worth $45 each. NM Lawrence Tamarkin took the Under-2200 prize ($33) with 3, and Frank Paciulli was top under-2000, also with 3 ($37).

Hoffman and Weiss Win Saturday Game/60

FM Asa Hoffman and Allen Weiss scored 3 1/₂ out of four to win the Marshall Chess Club Saturday Game/60 on January 17. They picked up $83 each for the victory. NM Yevgeni Margulis finished third with 3 points, worth $44.

Gordon Yang scored 2 1/₂ to win the Under-1700 prize of $52, while Darrian Robinson and Garth Palmer won the 1700-1999 prize, worth $26.50 apiece, with 2 points.

Lenderman, Figler, and Margulis Win "Four Rated Games"

IM Alex Lenderman, FM Ilye Figler, and NM Yevgeni Margulis tied for first in the January 15 edition of "Four Rated Games Tonight". The three scored 3 1/₂ points each to finish a full point ahead of the 20-player field.

Hulse, Frumkin, Ray Win Thursday-Night Members'

NM Brian Hulse and NM Ed Frumkin drew their last-round games (against NM George Berg and Mark Gerstl), and were joined at the top of the Thursday Night crosstable by Sarathi Ray, who defeated Nelson Farber. All three scored 3 1/₂ points out of five and won $50.

Gerstl and Jerry Monaco finished a half-point behind the leaders, winning $15 each.

The next Thursday Night Swiss will begin on January 22, and is open to all Marshall Chess Club members. Register by 6:45 PM to play one game a week at 7 PM through February 19.

Marshall Monday Under-1600 Continues

The second round of the Marshall Monday Night Under-1600 featured two upsets--Edward Daley and Tyler Schwartz defeated players rated 200 and 175 points higher on the wall chart, and join Guy Rawlins and Tyson Mao in the lead with 2-0.

The field is up to 22 players, and there's still time to get in on the action--register by 6:45 PM next Monday and you'll get to play one game per week through February 9.

Ashley, Bonin, and Figler Win "Four Rated Games"

GM Maurice Ashley , IM Jay Bonin, and FM Ilye Figler tied for first in the Thursday January 8 edition of the Chess Center of New York's "Four Rated Games Tonight". Each scored 3 1/₂ points and won $63.

Michael Hehir was top player under 2200, and Bora Yagiz was top under 2000. Both had3 points and took home $53.

Lenderman Wins Sliding Scale Quad

IM Alex Lenderman scored 3-0 to win the Sunday night Sliding Scale Quad at the Marshall on January 11. Lenderman picked up $74 for the victory. The event was directed by Steve Immitt for the Chess Center of New York, and the crosstable awaits your perusal on the USCF website.

Pillai Wins Winder Under-1800

Kadhir Pillai went 4-0 to win the Chess Center of New York's "Winter Under-1800" at the Marshall on Sunday January 11. Pillai won $100 for topping the 21-player field.

Polly Wright finished second a half-point behind Pillai, winning $66. Jackson Hueckel and Aaron Ross tied for third with 3-1, winning $17 each. The under-1600 prize was split by Amir Moazami and Dario Bonilla with 2 1/₂, good for $31 each. Michael Wu and Theodore Coyne split the Under-1400 prize ($28 each) with 2 points.
